about

Closer to Heaven was the final Polara release in late 2009. Susstones posted it on its website in advance of a "Sussedtacular" holiday show - the full extent of its distribution into the world. It got a few spins on local radio and a few downloads.... and then basically disappeared from view after a short time, remaining unavailable in any form.

In September 2019 research began for an Ed Ackerson tribute album. This led to Closer to Heaven being excavated from its digital tomb and interpreted in amazing fashion by The Ocean Blue, featuring former Polara drummer Peter Anderson, with guest lead vocalist Ebbot Lundberg from one of Ed's favorite bands, The Soundtrack Of Our LIves. It soon became evident that Closer to Heaven was much more than a lost artefact. Such was the power of the original song and its glorious reinterpretation that the aforementioned tribute project had not only found its lead track but a title as well.

This incredible, life-affirming track certainly deserved a better fate than to be consigned to a hard drive, never to be heard of again.

Susstones is very happy to rescue the original Polara version of Closer To Heaven from obscurity by releasing it as a digital single in conjunction with Closer To Heaven: A Tribute To Ed Ackerson, a tribute album featuring 30 artists celebrating Ed's music - both available exclusively on Susstone's Bandcamp and released on October 4, 2020, the one year anniversary of Ed's departure from this earthly realm.

lyrics

Polara - Closer to Heaven
written by Ed Ackerson

Heard you changing the station for reasons obscure to me
The infallible wisdom of the forces of victory
You're just back from the market, so why are all your cupboards bare?
The shelves alive with illusions but solutions were always in your head
Hiding there

Get out of the sun
Hang on to the sound that takes you closer to heaven
That'll take you closer to heaven
Remember this time
Hang on to the sound that takes you closer to heaven
It'll take you closer to heaven
This time

I'll trade you these stories for a place to hide these bones
The most scandalous data excavated from the deepest holes
I can see your horizon, doesn't look that far away
But when you're moving this slowly it's hard to tell
The weeks, the months, the days

Get out of the sun
Hang on to the sound that takes you closer to heaven
That'll take you closer to heaven
Remember this time
Hang on to the sound that takes you closer to heaven
It'll take you closer to heaven
This time

Remember this time
Remember this time
Remember this time
Remember this time
Remember this time
